Professional Experience
1998-Present Project Director, Juvenile Justice Staff Development Project, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Florida State University Responsible for managing a $185,000.00 grant from the Department of Education designed to develop competency based training materials for teachers and other personal working in juvenile justice and alternative school settings. Develop pre-service courses for multidisciplinary majors interested in professions related to juvenile justice. Develop and conduct inservice training for staff currently employed in juvenile justice settings.
1997-1998 Policy Analyst, Florida Department of Education - Promotion Responsible for policy, legislative and program issues related to public school discipline in classroom and school settings.
1992-1997 Administrator, Interagency and Related Services - Florida Department of Education (Section reorganized due to DOE reorganization) Responsible for the administration of the Interagency and Related Services section within the Bureau of Education for Exceptional Students, Florida Department of Education. Supervise six professional staff, two secretarial support staff, and two college interns. Section is responsible for all interagency responsibilities within the Bureau of Education for Exceptional Students, (i.e. serves as liaison between DOE and Health and Human Service agencies), school psychology, programs for the emotionally handicapped and severely emotionally disturbed, state operated educational programs which are not public schools, developing and monitoring programs for handicapped offenders in adult and juvenile justice facilities and the Multiagency Service Network for Severely Emotionally Disturbed Students (SEDNET)
1991-1992 Administrator, Interagency and Early Intervention Services - Florida Department of Education Responsible for the administration of the Interagency and Early Intervention Section within the Bureau of Education for Exceptional Students, Florida Department of Education. Supervise twelve professional staff, two secretarial support staff, and two college interns.
1987-1991 Interagency Liaison - Florida Department of Education Responsible for ensuring that public agencies serving handicapped children meet state standards for the provision of education and related services. Develop, review and monitor all cooperative agreements between the Department of Education and other public agencies providing education to handicapped children. Develop and implement interagency training programs related to the provision of services to handicapped children. Manager for the Statewide Multiagency Network for Severely Emotionally Disturbed Students. Liaison for adult and juvenile handicapped offender programs. Liaison for Pre-kindergarten Interagency Initiatives.
1985-1987 Program Consultant for Emotionally Handicapped Programs - Florida Department of Education Responsible for interpreting local, state, and federal mandates regarding the education of emotionally handicapped youth within the state of Florida. Additional duties included: identifying and supplying current and effective strategies, curricula, and interventions for emotionally handicapped students to school districts (67) within the state; grant writing; developing program efficacy studies; assisting in the development of a comprehensive program evaluation plan, and; providing technical assistance through oral and written presentations.
1984-1985 Principal - Alternative School for Disruptive Youth - Jacksonville Florida 1983-1984 Adult Basic Education Instructor (part-time/evening) Jacksonville Correctional Institute through Florida Junior College, Jacksonville, Florida. Responsible for developing and implementing a high school review curriculum for incarcerated juveniles who, due to the nature of their crimes were tried and convicted as adults.
1982-1983 Court Intervention Specialist - Exceptional Student Education Responsible for serving as the liaison between the Juvenile Justice System and the Public School System for all exceptional education students within the Duval County School District, Jacksonville Florida. Coordinated school planning for exceptional education students with medical, mental agreements. Reviewed exceptional student cases that were considered for possible expulsion action. Provided inservice and technical assistance in matters related to the disciplining of handicapped students. Served as principal for five district operated programs. Supervised 33 teachers, five administrative professionals, and five clerks.
1981-1982 Coordinator- Student Information Management Systems, Duval County School System, Jacksonville, Florida Responsible for integrating all aspects of the computerized Student Information Management System including Exceptional Education, Vocational Education, testing, grade reporting and scheduling. Trained school-based personnel in the use of computers and computer generated data. Supervised a staff of nine computer operators and two clerks.
1977-1981 Coordinator - Exceptional Education Research and Evaluation, Duval County Public School System, Jacksonville, Florida Responsible for the development of a computer-based exceptional education information management system. Assisted in the development of appropriate evaluation strategies for all exceptionalities and prepared reports for exceptional education management and assessment. Provided inservice training for local and district level staff concerning program evaluation, data interpretation and utilization.
1974-1977 Classroom Teacher- Emotionally Handicapped/ Self-Contained (Elementary), Duval County School System, Jacksonville, Florida 1974 Classroom Teacher - 6th Grade - Basic Education - Mayport Elementary School, Jacksonville Beach, Florida 1973 Adult Basic Education Instructor - Pinecastle Center For Mentally Retarded, Jacksonville, Florida Responsible for developing and implementing an academic and life management skills program for 250 mentally retarded adults.
1972-1974 Social Worker - Bureau of Indian Affairs, Anchorage, Alaska Served as intake counselor for indigents and as a caseworker responsible for providing support services for youth ages 12-18.
