This Juvenile Justice and Alternative Education Curriculum Guide is a series of training modules designed to be used by individuals whose responsibility it is to assist faculty in juvenile justice and alternative education settings become more effective in educating their students and controlling their behavior. This material has also proved effective in low performing schools and for faculty who are serving disruptive students in mainstreamed schools. The individuals targeted for these modules will hereafter be referred to as the "facilitators"; the school staff that they guide in the process of developing their own comprehensive school discipline system will hereafter be called the "participants."
Facilitators should be experts in training and in discipline who have themselves been trained in the use of this particular process for developing a school discipline system. This series is not intended to provide a "cookbook" for a facilitator of this process; rather it is intended to provide a basic set of lessons plans and materials that a trained facilitator will need to use the process successfully at a school site.
Included in this series are 9 guides:
Guide 1: Positive Behavioral Intervention Systems Model
Guide 2: Behavior Management and Classroom Organization
Guide 3: Thematic Teaching
Guide 4: Using Alternative Curricula to Teach Sunshine State Standards
Guide 5: Developing Classroom Academic and Behavioral Performance Incentive Systems
Guide 6: Developing School-Wide Academic and Behavioral Performance Incentive Systems
Guide 7: Developing Transition Plans from Alternative Placements - Self Determination
Guide 8: Cultural Diversity in the Classroom
Guide 9: Mastery LearningEach school staff should decide which of the nine modules they wish to be trained on. It is not necessary that all nine modules be used together, although it is highly recommended that every school complete Module 1 on school-wide discipline plans. Many of the topics repeat throughout the modules, but are presented in the context of that particular module. For example, a lesson plan on teacher beliefs regarding discipline appears in Module 1 and Module 2 because this topic is relevant to both classroom and school-wide discipline.
Each guide is divided into various numbered topics. Each topic area includes the following elements:
- Lesson Plans—Lesson plans and other information provided to directly assist the facilitator in leading the training sessions.
- Comments—Narrative provided to guide the facilitator's presentation of the content matter related to the topic. The comments may include directions for the facilitator on how to use the topic in training.
- Worksheets—Materials that present assignments and activities for the school staff participants to complete as part of the training.
- Appendices—Resource materials for the facilitator's use to serve as back-up material or to pass out to participants to strengthen a particular topic or issue.
