COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT

All students enrolled in the Role Model Program courses are required to complete 20 hours of community service for each class in which they enroll.

These hours are required in order to facilitate interaction with juveniles in a practical setting, to supplement the theoretical framework that is learned in the classroom.  It is anticipated that all students enrolled in the courses have an interest in working with juveniles in the future.  The community service requirement provides immediate and practical experience working with juveniles in real settings within the community. It is highly encouraged that students begin completing their community service hours early in the semester which will allow for the hours to be spread out throughout the semester.

Completing 20 of community service can be very beneficial for you, the student, and for the youth in which you are interacting.  Many youth do not know college students and are very excited to get to know you, what is college like, and many other questions that they will ask. Developing a relationship during your community service can have a lasting and positive impact on the youth in which you work.  In addition to the interpersonal benefits, there is also an academic benefit to completing 20 hours of community service.  The FSU Center for Civic Education runs a program called ServScript which allows you to have your community service hours documented on your transcript.  Having community service hours documented on your transcript is very beneficial when searching for employment or seeking entrance to graduate school.

The community service requirement is mandatory. Regardless of your interest in the Role Model Program, all students that are enrolled in the course are required to complete community service hours.  Although the Role Model Program recognizes  that many students work and go to school simultaneously, there are no exceptions to the requirement.  No student will be exempt from completing community service hours due to employment or school commitments.  Failure to complete the requirement will result in a incomplete or failing grade in the class.

Community Service Hour Guidelines

Many students enroll in 2 or more Role Model Program courses in the same semester.  As a result, the community service requirement is modified for these students.

Students that are enrolled in:

2 Role Model courses in the same semester are required to complete 30 hours of community service.

3 Role Model courses in the same semester are required to complete 40 hours of community service.

4 Role Model courses in the same semester are required to complete 50 hours of community service.
