Interested students
must complete and submit an application to the JJRMDP. Upon receipt and
review of the application (add an email address), Program staff will
notify the student and include the student in the Program's database.
Students will be notified of all Program announcements, events, and
developments.
Students enrolled in the Role Model
Program courses are required to complete 20 hours of community service.
These hours are required in order to facilitate interaction with juveniles
in a practical setting. It is anticipated that all students enrolled
in the courses have an interest in working with juveniles in the future.
The community service requirement provides valuable and practical
experience working with juveniles. The community service requirement is
mandatory. Failure to complete the requirement will result in a
failing grade in the class.
Students that are enrolled in 2 Role Model courses in the same semester are required to complete
30 hours of community service. Students that are enrolled
in 3 Role model courses in the same semester are required
to complete 40 hours of community service. Students that are
enrolled in 4 Role model courses in the same semester are
required to complete 50 hours of community service.
No.
Students from all schools and departments are invited to
participate in the Role Model Program. In the past, the Role Model
Program has had students from the following disciplines: Education, Music,
Social Work, and Sociology. All students regardless of major are required
to complete the 6 core courses, 50 hours of community service, and a
12-hour internship.
If you can not or would not like
to complete your community service hours with the Role Model Program
Projects, there are several options available. First, any agency
or program that deals with youth or juveniles "at-risk" of
delinquency is acceptable for community service hours. Popular
examples are Boys & Girls Club, Juvenile Detention Centers, Youth
Shelters, etc. If you do not know of any agencies or programs,
visit the FSU Center for Civic Education & Service. This office
will assist you in choosing a site to complete community service hours.
Compared
to other racial groups and gender, young Black males are the most at-risk
group of juveniles in today’s society. It
is our focus to provide the services of the Academy to young Black males
due to the severity of their social predicament. There is a
collection of startling statistics on young Black males on the Academy
page that helps to explain why young Black males are the only Academy
participants.
Students that complete the 6
core courses and the community service requirement are eligible to enroll
in an internship at an approved juvenile justice agency. Examples of
various internship agencies include the Department of Juvenile Justice,
Tallahassee Marine Institute, Belle Vue Middle School, and other agencies
or institutions that serve juveniles.
Although the Role Model Program was
designed for undergraduate students, graduate students are able to enroll
in the Role Model courses under special arrangements with the Program
staff. It is recommended that if you are interested in participating
in the Program, come by the Role Model Office at 322-A Hecht House or
email Lela Keels, Program Coordinator to discuss the arrangements.
Can I
complete course requirements while undertaking an internship?
While it is preferred that all
6 core courses be completed prior to the internship, students must have
completed a minimum of 4 courses and submit an acceptable plan for
completing the remaining courses to the Director for approval.
Can I
undertake a 15-credit internship in juvenile justice?
While not encouraged,
students upon the approval of the Director and written agreement to
successfully complete additional course requirements (to be determined by
the Director) may be allowed to undertake a 15-credit hour internship.
