ROLE MODEL PROGRAM INTERNSHIP

**SUMMER 2001 INTERNSHIP DEADLINE IS APRIL 6, 2001**

Internship Purpose

The JJRMDP Internship exists due to the need to improve the quality of life of the residents in the communities and to encourage students to commit to the societal responsibility of ensuring the welfare of the youth either in or at risk of the juvenile justice system. The focus of the internship component of the JJRMDP is to prepare students who intend to seek employment in the field of juvenile justice. The other focus of the Program is to provide agencies with students as workers. The students who take part in the Internship Program benefit by gaining valuable, direct experience in a juvenile justice setting, and appropriate training under a professional staff.

Students interested in completing an internship should first review the Role Model Program Requirements to determine their eligibility.  If you have met or will meet the requirements in the upcoming semester, please fill out the JJRMDP Internship Application and bring it to the Role Model Program Office in the semester preceding the internship to ensure placement and the meeting of Program application deadlines.

WHAT WILL I DO IN AN INTERNSHIP?

Students accepted for internships will work approximately thirty-two hours per week for an entire semester to gain valuable, direct experience in a typical juvenile justice setting. Students can be placed at their choice of several different agency locations. During internships, students may  perform various tasks including compiling offense records for youths on probation and transporting them to court appearances, assisting school teachers and mentoring the youth in various middle and high schools, and interviewing youth during screening and court intake procedures.

As part of the internship students are required to submit bi-weekly journals detailing their experiences and are also required to write a term paper on a topic in juvenile justice. Lastly, during the course of the internship, students are required to attend bi-weekly meetings. These meetings are group meetings with all the current interns and are designed to provide interns with staff support. In addition, the meetings provide all interns the opportunity to share their experiences and support each other. Upon completion of the internship, students are awarded the JJRMDP Certificate of Completion.
