CRIMNOTESVolume 31: Issue 1 The School of Criminology & Criminal Justice
welcomes all students, past, present, and future to join in celebrating
Florida State University’s Sesquicentennial.
The 150th anniversary celebration began on January 24, 2001
at the University’s Westcott Plaza, the oldest
continuous site of higher education in the state of Florida. The School of Criminology
& Criminal Justice’s focus week of October 29 through November 2, 2001
is our part of the University’s celebration, where we will be remembering
the School’s past, looking at it’s present, and imagining its future (various
activities are planned and listed below).
In addition, we’ve created a timeline showing
the history of criminology at the University, with photographs, memorabilia, and biographical information from
faculty, staff and alumni. We’re
also installing a criminology-themed art exhibit,
featuring pieces from various Tallahassee museums’ permanent collections
(including works by Judy Chicago, Robert Longo and Ed Love), with associated
text on the pieces written by the School’s faculty.
Alumni are using this week as a pan-year reunion and
will be on hand to discuss their memories of Florida State and their
achievements since graduation. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice
extends an invitation to everyone to join in the festivities.
Play the School Trivia Game each week until the celebration at www.criminology.fsu.edu.
Just click on the Sesquicentennial icon, follow the instructions, and
win a beautiful Sesquicentennial pin! [ Back to Top ]

Homecoming
2001
Please plan
on joining us as we prepare for the homecoming game. For Homecoming Weekend, the School will be hosting a
reception at its current home, the Hecht House, from 4-6 PM on Friday,
November 9th. As
you’ll read elsewhere, the School will have just completed its
Sesquicentennial Focus Week as part of the celebration of the University’s
Westcott Plaza being the oldest continuous site of higher education in the
state of Florida (please join us for those festivities also).
So when you come to join us in celebrating homecoming, please plan some
time to see our exhibits that will still be on display: the School’s
timeline showing the history of criminology at the University; and our
criminology-themed art exhibit. [ Back to Top ]
Study in
Prague with the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice
The city of
a hundred spires, Prague, rivals Paris in beauty. However, after the fall of communism in 1989, the borders of
the Czech Republic reopened to western influences including western -style
drug usage and crime. Last
summer, 25 students traveled overseas to study topics such as War Crimes,
Crime in An Emerging Democracy and Qualitative Methods in
the Czech Republic. The relative newness of the criminal justice system in the
Czech Republic makes it an exciting environment for research. Students were
able to observe criminal court trials, tour prisons, visit concentration camps
and take part in a Czech SWAT team operation. The School
continues the study abroad program this year under the direction of Dr. Laura
Bedard, who has led the program for the last two years. In 2002,
hospitality courses will be added, diversifying program participants. The
dates for 2002 are June 21 through August 2 and the cost $3,225.00. Interested
students can contact Dr. Bedard at lbedard@mailer.fsu.edu.

Hecht House
Classroom Gets a Face Lift
The School
has recently completed an upgrade of the classroom in Hecht House (Room 102)
to bring it on a par with the other technology-enhanced classrooms on-campus.
A console at the front of the room was custom designed and built for
the room gives the instructor access to the following aids: a desktop
computer; a VCR/DVD system; and a document camera (which displays any document
placed beneath it, negating the need for overhead transparencies, but allowing
for their use if desired). A
top-of-the-line projection system allows the entire class to comfortably see
images generated from any of these devices.
A touch screen display on top of the console manages the various
components, while plug-ins are available on the top of the console for a
personal laptop computer or other devices. The room
augments the Edutek ‘ Classroom in a Cart’ system that the School obtained
last year. The Edutek system
consists of fifteen laptop computers, each containing a card allowing for
wireless communication via an antenna within the cart.
Thus any professor wishing to use computer resources in class may do
so. As an added benefit, the
self-contained quality of the cart allows the professor to have the same
computer capability in any room in Hecht House that allows the cart to be
plugged into a data-link. [ Back to Top ]
The
Experience
of a Lifetime by Rochelle Allen, FSU Criminology Undergraduate Have you ever had an experience that made your dreams seem like they could be a reality? From May 29-June22, 2001 I had such an experience. This summer I was fortunate to be accepted into the Florida State University College of Law Summer Law Program for Undergraduate Students. Since 1992, the FSU College of Law has invited college undergraduates to a month-long program to expose them to the possibilities of law as a career.
At the end
of the program there was an award ceremony. At this time individuals who made
outstanding progress throughout the program were recognized.
I received an award for writing the best letter of advice to a client.
I was very pleased and felt it was the perfect way to end an
invigorating summer experience.
