Peer Review- CCJ 5636
Feedback Instrument for Student Evaluation of Papers

Directions: For each of the following criterion supply both a numerical score of 0 to 10 (10 being the highest score) and evaluative comments on the author's strengths and weaknesses.

I. The First Paragraph

A. Does it effectively outline the paper?

B. Are all of the paper's subtopics mentioned in the first paragraph?

C. After reading the first paragraph, how interested are you in reading the entire paper?

 

II. Research Content

A. References

1. Do you think the student did an adequate job of finding resources for the paper?

2. Did one or two references seem to be relied upon by the student?

3. Were the sources up to date?

4. What types of additional resources would you suggest the author consult?

B. Logic of Argument/Coverage of the Topic

1. Did the paper contain concrete details and examples to support each of its main points?

2. What questions were raised by you as you read the paper which the author never addressed?

3. Into what additional areas would you suggest the author direct their research in the future?

 

III. Writing Style

A. Sentence Structure

1. Is each sentence clear, concise, and complete?

2. Do sentences build upon one another?

3. Is the paper free of run-on sentences?

B. Paragraph Form

1. Are paragraph breaks used when appropriate?

2. Is material from one paragraph needlessly repeated in another?

C. Transition

1. Does there appear to be a good reason why we are moving from one subtopic or paragraph to the next?

2. Is all the relevant material placed within the appropriate subsection?

3. Is the ordering of subtopics in the most effective sequence?

D. Spelling/Grammar/Use of Language

1. Are there repeated spelling mistakes in the paper?

2. Is verb tense used consistently through-out the paper? e.g. past or present?

3. Are words used appropriately or sometimes misapplied?

E. Overall Writing Style

1. Is the overall writing style interesting or boring?

2. Is the use of direct quotes effective or distracting?

3. Does the paper flow smoothly from one subtopic to the next?

 

IV. Citation Format

A. Does the paper use the required citation and reference format correctly?

B. Is all material footnoted that needs to be? And vice versa?
